LOVE'S LESSONS

From the January 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A heart once sighed in sad dismay.
So real seemed sorrow, sin, and fear,
That God was thought aye far away;
'Twas not discerned that Love was near.
Self-pity would not search within.

And lo! a bird was heard without.
Its song was selfless, pure, and free
As if 'twould say, Thou canst not doubt;
Dear heart, look up, God loveth thee.
Then thought commenced to search within.

And there in careless disarray,
Its mental home with self was soiled.
Thought turned to God, did humbly pray.
In meekness was the tempter foiled;
For Truth indeed doth cleanse within.

Our God doth for His children care;
He knoweth neither fear nor sin.
And as we learn His love to share,
Much priceless treasure do we win.
Love hath its lessons: watch within!

Dear Father-Mother God, I pray,
Help me so loving, pure, to be,
That all who pass my joyous way
May gain a clearer glimpse of Thee.
Thy light and truth be mine within.
