LAW IN HEALING AND GOVERNMENT

From the January 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 128) Mrs. Eddy says, "The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man." This statement recognizes the reign of God's law as supreme in all that pertains to the harmony of man and the universe. The court scene presented at the close of the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice" (ibid., pp. 430-442), elucidates the place and power of spiritual law, and the method of its operation in the healing of the sick. Thus our Leader's extensive illustration of the operation of divine Principle in healing the sick is based upon court practices.

The real man is the image and likeness of God, as stated in the first chapter of Genesis: "And God said Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." It is generally admitted that if God is perfect, He cannot know sickness, and man, His image and likeness, cannot be sick. The truth demonstrated confirms the true account of the creation of man as given in the first chapter of Genesis; and this demonstration means deliverance from the false accusation of the material senses and the establishing of the true consciousness of man's real being as the image and likeness of God.

The truth of being is expressed through the law of God. This law determines the activity of eternal life. Jesus said, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." The law of God, as demonstrated by Christ Jesus, is the activity of omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Being. This law of God, Life, governs man. False belief presents the claim that man can be sick, and that this sickness may ultimate in death. But life is continuous, and cannot be interrupted in its activity, much less destroyed. Like the Christ it is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever.
