My gratitude to God for what Christian Science has done for me comes from my heart. For years I suffered from very painful gallstone colic, and later on from a serious liver complaint. In vain I sought for relief, since I no longer believed I could be healed. Despite medicines, cures, and so-called strengthening remedies, the attacks became more and more severe; in fact I had an attack daily, and became so weak physically that I could no longer get up. The doctor could do nothing more for me except give me morphia, and from a human point of view nothing could save me. I had, as it were, taken leave of life.
My greatest anxiety was my religion; for during this time I had scarcely any faith in God, because I thought He had sent this condition upon me. And so I was in a state of confusion, doubt, and discontent. In this state of grief and pain my attention was called to Christian Science by some dear friends. At once I thought to myself, If human hands can do no more for you, God's goodness can give you life. I asked a Christian Science practitioner to come and see me and to give me treatment. It was given lovingly and kindly, and very soon there was such marked improvement that I could get up. With the recognition of the truth that God is Love and good, the pain disappeared, and in three weeks I was able to attend church.
In my joy, and feeling that I was physically well, I forgot to watch my thoughts aright, so that four weeks later I was again obliged to ask the practitioner to help me, which she did with great patience and love. I was thereby led out of darkness into the light of God, and in four weeks was perfectly well. Since that time I have been in better health than for years, and can do all my work without getting tired. Every morning when I get up I think, God be praised and thanked!
