It is my desire publicly to express a measure of the gratitude that I daily feel for what Christian Science has done for me. Over six years ago, after the birth of our fourth child, I was in despair over my lack of strength and health. From a physical standpoint I did not see how I could take my place in the home and assume the care of a family of active children. My religious beliefs had been waning for many years, as my search for something that would stand the test of reason had left me full of doubt. I had tried to accept parts of several theories, and the result was not satisfying so far as immortal cravings were concerned.
As I had been a trained nurse prior to my marriage, Christian Science had been a topic for much ridicule; and in my ignorance I considered it a boon for people with imaginary ills only. When a dear friend suggested that it would fill my every need for health and happiness, my husband and I, after talking the matter over, decided to see what it could do for me. Having much false pride regarding the subject, I was always careful to conceal my copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been lent me, whenever callers came from whom I feared ridicule. During my first perusal of the volume my glasses, worn since childhood, were broken. Though I had seemed to understand nothing of what I had read, with loving help from a friend for a few days, it was never necessary to replace them. For many years I had suffered from severe headaches and eyestrain, and seldom read or sewed at night. After our first baby was born, I could not read a newspaper for three months. When this trouble was overcome, it proved beyond a doubt to me the efficacy of Christian Science as a healing agent. I began to see that my prejudice had been due wholly to a lack of knowledge of the subject. Since then physical discords of many kinds have been healed in our family, the majority of the healings having taken place gradually through our growing understanding of the truth. Constipation of long standing, catarrh, and backache are some of the ills that have been overcome. The problem of lack has been met, and we are very grateful for the lessons learned during this testing time.
The experience of childbirth under Christian Science treatment was another wonderful proof to me of the power of Truth over so-called material law. I am stronger and better in every way physically. The criticism and prejudice that I formerly entertained concerning Mrs. Eddy have been replaced with untold love and gratitude.
