I am so full of gratitude to God for the many blessings which Christian Science has brought me, especially in the literature established for our daily use by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, that I feel a deep desire to contribute a testimony, hoping it may encourage others to press on, in spite of seeming obstacles in the way.
From the age of sixteen, I was discontented and unhappy in my home, as well as in my study of music. The World War was then in its third year, and I visited many hospitals, singing and playing to the wounded men, wondering all the time what the reason for it could possibly be. I longed to know real love and to be able to heal, either as a nurse or with my voice, if singing was to be my profession.
Luxury and material pleasures brought me no satisfaction, and in 1922 my father passed on, leaving my mother, a young brother, and me without any means whatsoever. After many struggles as a young singer against poverty and temptation, I was offered a position as a contract singer on the staff of the Broadcasting Corporation. This was in 1929, and with it came a good salary and much publicity. However, after three years, overwork, a false sense of responsibility, and hatred of my environment culminated in a nervous breakdown, for which the kind doctor could give me no remedy. On the brink of despair, I was led to the office of an old friend who had become a Christian Science practitioner. After a talk with her I learned the truth about my real environment, and on re-entering Broadcasting House a little later, I looked up and noticed on the wall of the foyer the words, "God is Omnipotent." This brought me much comfort and many times helped me when it seemed that minds many governed.
