UNSWERVING PURPOSE

From the July 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Unswerving purpose! The very word "unswerving" tends to lift thought above false thinking —above the petty, the mean, the wavering—into purposeful effort.

What a standard our Leader established in setting before us this unswerving, undeviating purpose! As Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, when she understood the great Master's purpose and mission, when she saw that his "mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Pref., p. xi), she felt compelled to convey to humanity her understanding and vision. She writes (ibid., p xi), "When God called the author to proclaim His Gospel to this age, there came also the charge to plant and water His vineyard."

She also tells us something of what it means to accept this charge, for she says in a sermon delivered as early as 1880 (Christian Healing, p. 1), "We have asked, in our selfishness, to wait until the age advanced to a more practical and spiritual religion before arguing with the world the great subject of Christian healing; but our answer was, 'Then there were no cross to take up, and less need of publishing the good news.'"
