Christian Science was brought to my attention some twenty-five years ago by my mother, while I was taking a course in science and engineering at a university. As this religion contradicted practically all the theories on which the physics of that day was based, I did not receive it at all kindly. However, when Iascertained by my own observation that Christian Science really did produce results, I consented to have treatment for various troubles, with the result that they were overcome in a remarkable and wonderful way.
I found that this Science could be subjected to the test of practical demonstration in a manner comparable to the experimental method of physics and chemistry. In these subjects the available experimental data are first expressed in a provisional hypothesis. Starting from this as a basis, other conclusions are arrived at by the deductive process, and then further experiments are devised to check these theories. I proceeded along the same lines with Christian Science. Accepting provisionally certain statements in the Bible in the light of Christian Science, and following the rules laid down in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy as far as I was able, I found that very beneficial results were obtained in the healing of physical disorders and other inharmonious conditions. Help was obtained from a practitioner at the time of examinations, and I endeavored to apply Christian Science to my studies, with very helpful results. I am convinced that it was only by the aid of this Science that I was enabled to complete two courses without failure in any subjects.
During the World War, which occurred immediately after my graduation, Christian Science was a great help and comfort to me. On one occasion, while on a transport from Australia, I suffered from a bad attack of influenza. It was impossible to obtain the services of a practitioner, so I retired to a quiet part of the deck and there thought over all I could remember of an article in a Christian Science Sentinel which I had read at Capetown a few weeks previously. After about an hour I felt much relieved and comforted, and the next morning not a trace of the disease could be found. It is not only the physical healing for which I am grateful, but the fact that this experience proved to me that Christian Science is the Christianity of Christ Jesus which healed the sick, and that all the wonderful statements in Science and Health about God, man, and the universe are really true.
