UNIVERSAL PEACE

From the October 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a discussion of the world situation with one whose own people seemed bereft of home, nation, and surety, the thought of God, good, as omnipresent and omnipotent was lovingly presented and partly accepted. This profound and all-sustaining thought of God, good, as the one and only presence and power, is a paramount spiritual fact pervading the pages of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It was now offered not only as a hope and an assurance for one's own individual peace and safety, but also with the explanation that the truth contained in this spiritual fact, if realized and utilized individually, would be the true means and unfailing aid in establishing universally the much-needed peace desired and sought today.

The saddened one, who thus caught a glimpse of true comfort and solace, was shown how widespread and far-reaching is the influence of even one individual's correct thinking, and how right thinking, if persisted in, would result in healing and salvation for those at home and abroad. "But how can I, one individual, by right thinking, help to lead my countrymen out of distress and into the attainment of their divine rights, or aid in the establishment of a nation's freedom?" came the plaintive cry. Mrs. Eddy has answered this query in her book "Pulpit and Press." She says (p. 4): "You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this. Then you will find that one is as important a factor as duodecillions in being and doing right, and thus demonstrating deific Principle." She adds, "Each of Christ's little ones reflects the infinite One, and therefore is the seer's declaration true, that 'one on God's side is a majority.' A single drop of water may help to hide the stars, or crown the tree with blossoms."

A single life of prayer and consecrated, systematic study, faithful to the teachings of the great Way shower, Christ Jesus, and loyal in its support of the organization established by his humble follower, Mary Baker Eddy, is a dynamic force in the salvation of mankind. Such a life will, in answer to its humble petition for mercy, hear and experience the reassurance given in the one hundred and thirty-sixth Psalm, "For his mercy endureth for ever." A single thought of Truth, entertained and faithfully practiced, is a most successful weapon in the hands of mortals. Every evil thought reversed, every unkind word stifled, every unloving act corrected, is a mighty influence for good in the redemption of mankind. Every impoverished life enriched with the knowledge of true spiritual substance, every heavy heart that with patient waiting and working has emerged from its night of error into the dawn of a new day brightened with gladsome Truth, is lifting the weight from a sin-sick world. Indeed, every declaration of Truth, even though but partially realized, leaves one who voices it and the whole world better than before the statement was uttered, so powerful is Truth. Thus we can readily foresee that individuals, congregated actively in accord with spiritually scientific thinking, will contribute to the ultimate manifestation of universal peace.
