In their natural beauty and strength, hills and mountains convey a sense of permanence, protection, and peaceful habitation. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 511), "Spiritually interpreted, rocks and mountains stand for solid and grand ideas." They may stand for eternal verities, for purity, inspiration, revelation.
In many places throughout her writings, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, impresses one with her love of nature in its manifest forms, as well as what it hints of the spiritual universe. This characteristic of our revered Leader is particularly apparent where, on pages 185 and 186 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," she describes the beauty and grandeur of the rugged hills of New Hampshire, her native state, and quotes from Mrs. Hemans:
"For the strength of the hills, we bless Thee,
Our God, our fathers' God!"
