CHRISTIAN SCIENCE—WHAT IS IT?

[Based upon a Letter prepared for an Inquirer]

From the October 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is founded on the teachings of the Bible. "Science," according to Webster's dictionary, "is systematized knowledge considered in reference to the discovery or understanding of truth." All the natural sciences have their textbooks; Christian Science has two, namely, the Bible, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

That which is scientific should be capable of confirmation or proof. Happily, abundant proof of the truth of Christian Science is found in the healing of all types of sickness; of lives purified and regenerated; of domestic, professional, and business problems of every nature solved through the sincere application of the rules for living which are found in the textbooks of Christian Science.

Fortunately, one does not have to be a scholar in order to understand and demonstrate Christian Science. On page x of the Preface to Science and Health, we find the following statement: "No intellectual proficiency is requisite in the learner, but sound morals are most desirable." And on the following page we read: "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural."
