Testimonies of Healing

I became interested in Christian Science...

From the February 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I became interested in Christian Science through an experience I had while I was in a hospital. I had undergone a serious operation, and a sedative was given to me day and night to alleviate the severe pain from which I was suffering. The physician in charge decided that it was no longer wise to continue using the drug. He ordered the substitution of sterile water, and gave it in exactly the same way, with the hypodermic needle. This sterile water injection relieved the pain, and had the same effect on the body as the sedative had had previously. After three or four days, quite by accident, I learned what they had done, and upon reflection decided to leave the hospital.

I knew a little of Christian Science, having in my possession a copy of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had been given to me by a friend. I told the physician that I had decided to study Christian Science, and asked him to have me taken home. Then I began an earnest study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. In a very short time I was completely well, and have relied solely on Christian Science from that day to this.

More recently, while visiting relatives in a southern city, I fell headlong down a long flight of stairs, and was unconscious for three days. My relatives were not interested in Christian Science. They immediately called in a physician, who had X-ray pictures taken and pronounced the injury to be a basal skull fracture. My husband was in the North at that time. He was notified, and communicated with a practitioner for help. When I regained consciousness I asked for Christian Science, but this was refused me by those present, who declared that if I must die they at least would know they had given me the best help available. I then asked a dear friend to mail a note to a Christian Scientist in that city, asking her to help me find a place to stay where I could have Christian Science treatment only. My friend immediately said that she would go to the hotel and I should occupy her apartment. Upon my arrival in her lovely home, I found a Christian Science nurse awaiting me. Twelve days after I was taken to this friend's home, I began a trip of twenty-five hundred miles by automobile to a western city, where we were to make our home. The healing was complete and permanent.
