Testimonies of Healing

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and...

From the April 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." I should like to express my gratitude for some of the benefits we have received during the six years of our study of Christian Science.

In September, 1933, after I had suffered for five years from a nervous breakdown, constipation, stomach trouble, and weak eyes, Christian Science was presented to me by an aunt. I had been eating very little, and could not see without glasses. I had tried different medical treatments, but had become so ill that I had to stay in bed. Then my aunt brought me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. She said that if I would study it with the Bible, it would heal me. From the first day I read it, I knew I had found that for which I had been looking for years, and that it would heal me, although I could not understand it at that time. I read as much as I could and my husband read to me, but because of false belief and fear I was in bed for a year after we started the study of Christian Science. Then the light of Truth began to dawn on me, and with the help of a faithful practitioner I had my first healing, which was of constipation, for which I had taken laxatives almost daily for five years. I stopped using laxatives and held to the truth that, because all action is in God, there can be no inaction. In ten days I was healed, and have never since taken a laxative or a material remedy of any kind.

Immediately after this demonstration was made, the practitioner said that she wanted me to arise and walk. I was willing to obey, for I was learning the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 183): "Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power." I walked for the first time in fifteen months. My progress was slow because there was still much fear to be overcome, but I knew God's promises are true and I determined to press on and prove more of the truth which I knew would make me free. About a year later I broke my glasses. I have not needed them since, although I had worn them for twenty-six years.
