OUR INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY

From the May 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Perhaps one of the most startling, as well as the most helpful and encouraging lessons learned by the student of Christian Science, is that each individual is responsible for his own thinking. His destiny is not determined by human caprice; it is controlled by spiritual law.

Redemption, or the evangelization of the human selfhood, whereby the perfection and completeness of man as the reflection of infinite Mind are brought to light and made universally practical, is humanity's great need. The superstitious beliefs in fatalism, chance or luck, and eternal damnation, are eliminated from human consciousness when it is realized that each individual, as he conforms his thinking to spiritual truth, has divinely bestowed power to control his life harmoniously.

Mankind feels instinctively that to experience health, happiness, and prosperity is its right, and it is ever in search of them. This search, in ancient as well as in more recent times, has been made largely in the realm of matter, with the result that human welfare has been unstable. Good is spiritual, and exists in the realm of Spirit. God gives us His spiritual ideas. These, when rightly utilized, are made manifest in ways which make for human assurance.
