TRUE DEMOCRACY

From the May 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Revelation we read, "Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, . . . and I will write upon him my new name." Christian Science teaches us to rejoice that we are today of the Church Triumphant, as we rise to the requirements of the "new name," Christian Scientist. In our true selfhood we are already perfect reflections of our loving Father-Mother God. Through spiritual understanding we have the power and the ability to overcome evil suggestions that we would otherwise have accepted. Holding to spiritual truth, the Christian Scientist can become a pillar in God's temple. Thus divine Love will guide and impel his actions.

The Christian Science church affords opportunities for each member to exercise his heaven-bestowed power to express God. What a vast band of workers we are, scattered over the whole earth, and how our love should reach out to one another, far and near, as we move forward with Christ Jesus' teaching and example before us, and having for our instruction the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, revelator, Discoverer, and Founder of Christian Science, and Leader of our movement! Blessed, indeed, are we of this working band!

The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, with its branches, is world-wide. The branches are vitally essential to the parent vine in its work of disseminating the truth. Each alert member has the love of our Cause so deeply rooted in his heart that he would not knowingly put an obstruction in the way of its advancement. This love should and can be ever active. In a By-Law in the Manual (Art. XXIII, Sect. 10) Mrs. Eddy says, "In Christian Science each branch church shall be distinctly democratic in its government, and no individual, and no other church shall interfere with its affairs." This is a law, which all branch churches must obey, if they would be in accord with the organization our Leader established.
