In Proverbs it is written, "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." The Bible records numerous instances in which righteous people were guided, protected, and sustained through hearing and obeying God's voice. It was not through the physical organ of hearing that these people were directed, for none of the physical senses can cognize the things of Spirit.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines "ears" thus: "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 585). One is not dependent, then, upon corporeal sense for spiritual hearing. True hearing is spiritual and indestructible. The "still small voice" speaks through the hearing ear — spiritual understanding — and thus we recognize God's message to man.
Abraham, Moses, and Elijah all received guidance through the "still small voice." Jesus was divinely directed by the truth which came to him through the hearing ear, as he communed with his heavenly Father. He realized that he could do nothing by his own effort; he must listen for the divine directing and follow it.
