For many years I have attended...

From the May 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For many years I have attended Christian Science services and studied the Lesson Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. I started in the Sunday school when very young, and at the present time I am active in church work. Shortly after I had enrolled in the Sunday school, my parents began attending services. In a short while, with the loving, untiring work of a Christian Science practitioner, my father was healed of tuberculosis, drinking, and smoking. One evening he returned home from his work suffering a great deal, and he asked me to help him. I took the Bible and read the ninety-first Psalm to him and then explained it in the way my Sunday school teacher had taught me. My father dropped off to sleep and about an hour later awoke a well man.

While I was on a training ship during the World War my experiences were many and varied, from the temptation to indulge in sinful habits, almost to death itself. I remember that once, while climbing aloft to take my place in the crow's nest for look out duty, I nearly froze, not only because of the storm that was raging, but from an intense sense of fear. Swinging on a Jacob's ladder, leading from the end of the side stays up to the nest, I struggled to reach my destination, and I know that if it had not been for what little knowledge I had of God I should have fallen and been swept out to sea. I am also grateful for the opportunity I had to prove the power of Christian Science over the effects of inoculation and over disease.

Years ago, before I graduated from school, there was a dearth of jobs and my parents were worried about employment for me. But I knew that God, Mind, never created an idea for which He did not provide abundantly. Two months before graduation a woman came to my mother in church and asked her if she knew of a boy who would like a temporary position in a large jewelry store. Three days later I had the position, and I worked in the store until I went on the training ship. When I returned after the war the position was still open for me. Later a better opportunity came, with twice the amount of income, and now I am in a business of my own. I have never had a day of unemployment in all these years.
