MUSIC: ITS RELATION TO CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the May 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Human thought is being educated progressively out of its limitations toward values infinite and eternal. All that is true must in its fundamental nature be known spiritually, since the truth of being is wholly spiritual. One of the various modes of expression that have found a normal place in human experience is music, which in its broader sense includes song. A dictionary definition of music is "melody or harmony generally, as heard in nature or art."

There exists the truth about music, and it is well worth our while to recognize that fact, because the understanding thereof contributes increasingly to our happiness and to the glory of God.

Throughout the ages music, vocal and instrumental, has been a means of rendering thanksgiving and praise to God. Although Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, doubtless did not intend that music should occupy in Christian Science services the place of first importance, she recognized the fact that, interpreted and rendered according to Christian Science, it is healing in its nature. This is evident from the fact that the various musical periods in connection with our church services (including prelude and postlude) amount to a considerable part of the entire service. These periods are provided for in the Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy.
