Although I had been a member of an orthodox church from girlhood, it did not meet my need. When Christian Science was first presented to me my response to God's voice was not immediate. The seed was sown, however, and through my persistent study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I experienced steady spiritual growth through the years following, although my family was very much opposed to Christian Science.
I have been healed of a painful case of neuritis. This healing was brought about as tender, compassionate love for others who had made mistakes flooded my consciousness. Calling upon me from a distant city, the same faithful practitioner helped me to see the light. During this time I drew my nurse's attention to a rapidly growing wen on our elder son's cheek. This was late one night, and by morning the wen had opened and disappeared. The nurse's clear awareness of God's perfect child had proved what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 9): "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." This healing meant much to me because my brother had undergone an operation for a wen, which left an ugly scar upon his cheek.
These healings helped us to stand more firmly. "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee." That exquisite passage of Scripture means to me the purifying and cleansing waters of Truth, and not the muddy river of error; in holding to that, I never lost my joy through the following cleansing process.
