Christian Science was presented to me by a friend at a time when life seemed very dark and the prospects for the future hardly worth while. This friend told me that right thinking would solve my problems, and that Christian Science would teach me how to think rightly. This Science had obviously helped him, so I decided to investigate it. As I started to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I began to see a wonderful new life ahead of me, and I soon found that Christian Science would answer the many questions that I had long desired to have answered. The unfolding of the truth during the first year of my study of Science was the most wonderful experience in my life. No one can read Science and Health with an open thought without being wonderfully blessed, and I have found that each rereading of this great book has brought further unfoldment of Truth.
It was not for physical healing that I turned to Christian Science, but I soon read something in the textbook that caused me to lay aside reading glasses. After about two years of study I had an opportunity to apply Science when I was overcome by influenza. There was a night of great discomfort and very little sleep, but the time was spent in reading Science and Health. In the morning I was so weak that I could not arise, so I called a practitioner for help. By noon I was free, so I arose and returned to my work.
Soon after I had the inspiring experience of class instruction in Christian Science, which taught me how to apply the truth in healing and in building a better life, my father, who had been a physician and was in his eighty-fourth year, became completely deaf. It was necessary to write whatever we had to say to him. When he stopped trying to regain his hearing by material methods and was resigned to deafness, I wrote a note and asked him if he would like to turn to Christian Science for healing. He replied that he would try anything if there was any hope of regaining his hearing, and he agreed to read Science and Health and have Christian Science treatment. Five days later his hearing was restored. He announced, also, that he had lost his taste for tobacco at the same time, although he had smoked for over sixty years. No specific metaphysical work had been done for this added healing. My father retained his hearing until he passed on at the age of eighty-eight.
