Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 66), "Trials are proofs of God's care." We have had many proofs that Christian Science heals and protects, and I am very grateful to God for them.
One very cold night I put a heating pad in the bed and went to bed with the window open. Some time later my family smelled smoke, and entering my room, discovered the blankets on fire. I had not awakened, and although a number of blankets were badly burned, my clothes were not even scorched and the fire had not touched me.
Our son, who has had Christian Science since birth, attended the Christian Science Sunday School until he was twenty. When he was quite a young boy he was experimenting with some chemicals, which exploded, badly injuring his hand and blowing off the end of his thumb. I was not at home at the time, and he was rushed to a doctor, who declared that his hand must be amputated immediately. He insisted on the boy being taken to a hospital, which was done. In the meantime I returned and called a Christian Science practitioner, who asked me to get in touch with the hospital and have him released. He was released from the hospital and taken to another doctor, friendly to Christian Science, who dressed the hand but used no medicine or surgery. This doctor reported to the practitioner each day after dressing the hand. Soon the thumb started to fill in, and in about six weeks the bandages were removed. The hand is now entirely normal, and the thumb fully restored, only a slight scar remaining. During this time my son did not miss a single radio broadcast on the program on which he was working at the time. The accident occurred on a Friday and he was on a program the following Tuesday.
