AS A MAN THINKETH

From the December 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the wise man in the book of Proverbs meditated upon the moral nature of man, he declared (23:7), "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he." In Biblical literature the heart symbolizes the center of the affections, emotions, and desires. How important, then, if we would experience the peace and harmony for which mankind is ever seeking, that our consciousness should be protected by the armor of Godlike thoughts and the wisdom of the one Mind.

When we realize that all our moments are filled with some manner of thinking, we should do well to begin with the true concept of the eternal perfection of God, His laws, and His creation, including man. When, through the earnest study of Christian Science, we comprehend that God and His idea, man, are one and inseparable, we can more readily understand that God's plan includes well-being, peace, joy, harmony, and unlimited good. For this reason the Christian Scientist soon discovers that discord, confusion, and anxiety are the direct results of his accepting thoughts which have no foundation in infinite Mind, in God's good will toward men.

Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, well understood how perverted and illusive beliefs can claim to disrupt the harmony of men's lives. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes (p. 403), "Mortal mind is constantly producing on mortal body the results of false opinions; and it will continue to do so, until mortal error is deprived of its imaginary powers by Truth, which sweeps away the gossamer web of mortal illusion."
