"DIVINE LOVE ALONE GOVERNS MAN"

From the December 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"In Science, divine Love alone governs man." These seven simple words are read in all Christian Science churches on the first Sunday of each month. They constitute a great healing statement, designated by Mary Baker Eddy as "A Rule for Motives and Acts" (Manual of The Mother Church, Art. VIII, Sect. 1).

This unique Rule serves as a beacon light of warning and safe guidance to the great army of Christian Scientists. It affords a splendid opportunity for a mental inventory and for the casting out of all that is worthless or of doubtful value. In its entirety it reads as follows: "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously."

Upon a certain occasion Moses declared to the children of Israel (Deut. 30:15, 16), "See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; in that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply."
