I took up the study of Christian Science...

From the December 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I took up the study of Christian Science, not for personal healing, but to try to find God. Although I had been brought up in a home where the Bible was much used and had attended an orthodox church since childhood, I still felt there were many things that were unexplained which I wanted to understand. I felt that God should heal us today as He healed through Christ Jesus centuries ago, and I was far from satisfied.

I had never been really strong, for I suffered from periodical attacks of malaria, and was oftentimes near the valley of the shadow. When I came in contact with Christian Science I had just lost my daughter, and that sorrow threatened to destroy me. I was in a most depressed state, and tried to live only because of the younger children, who needed me.

A dear friend sent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I tried to study it in order to get some comfort. I did not find it easy, but I persevered, and gradually I began to see the light, albeit dimly at first. Then I witnessed the healing of my son, a boy eight years old, through the consecrated work of a Christian Science practitioner, when the doctors said he was dying. I felt then that I was indeed standing on "holy ground" (Ex. 3:5).
