It is recorded in the third chapter of the book of Exodus that Moses was a keeper of the sheep of his father-in-law and that on one occasion he had gone to the backside of the desert, even to the mountain of God, which was named Horeb. Here the angel appeared to him in a bush which burned with fire, but was not consumed. When he saw the angel, he exclaimed (verse 3), "I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt." And we read that "when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said,... put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground."
It is wonderful to contemplate that just at the moment when Moses was ready or prepared, "he turned aside to see;" he turned from the material and was able to receive from God the sacred commission to go forth, take command of his people, and deliver them from the hands of Pharaoh. It was Moses' spiritual vision that enabled him to see something of the divine nature and of his own mission.
Through Christian Science we see the significance of attaining the Horeb height and being able to see beyond the veil of the material senses. This Science in its revelation of Truth gives to the student of today the great spiritual vision of what God is and of what man is as His image and likeness. Spiritual vision illumines human consciousness and reveals the man of God as being without flaw or blemish, without error of any name or nature. It helps us to claim for ourselves here and now our divine heritage as sons and daughters of God. Man is not material or mortal; man images forth God, and because of this he cannot manifest the pains of sense, fear, hate, or other discord. Mortal so-called existence is a dream state and not the spiritual reality. It is glorious to know that God did not make evil, and hence it is unreal and powerless. The terms Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love indicate God's divine offices, but refer to one perfect God. Man is the true and perfect reflection of this perfect God. Spiritual vision derives from the Christ-consciousness and brings into our waiting thought the very harmonies of heaven.
