A dear member of our immediate family who had suffered for more than forty years sought relief in Christian Science. He required my assistance when attending the services in a Church of Christ, Scientist, and this was my introduction to Christian Science. Through his attendance at church services, his own study, and the help of a kind Christian Science practitioner, this man was healed and abundantly blessed.
At that time, nearly thirty years ago, both he and I were members of the board of an orthodox church. Having no particular physical need then, I did not immediately accept Christian Science. Some exploratory reading was done; but it was not until I suffered from a very painful boil that I gave any serious consideration to Science. Nearly every year of my adult life boils had caused me much distress and inconvenience. On this occasion a friend, being aware of my distress, suggested that I seek healing through Christian Science instead of through surgery, as I had previously done. To his kind suggestion I very sarcastically asked, "Do you think that Christian Science could heal that?" His reply was, "Try it." This caused me to do some thinking, and that evening I visited the practitioner who had helped the other member of our family. Much to my surprise I received an instantaneous healing.
This healing awakened in me a real interest, and a sincere and earnest study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was begun. For a number of years thereafter many blessings were experienced by me and my family. Our children were enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School at a very early age. During their childhood they were healed of whooping cough, measles, and pneumonia, as well as of many other discords. My business showed remarkable improvement, and we enjoyed a very happy existence. Then came a testing time, which tried our faith to the utmost. During this period the smoking habit of many years' standing was destroyed for me and my way was opened for church membership.
