THE STRENGTH OF STILLNESS

From the December 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Indicative of the alliance existing between the quality of stillness and the divine nature are Mary Baker Eddy's words in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 559): "The 'still, small voice' of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound. The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear. It arouses the 'seven thunders' of evil, and stirs their latent forces to utter the full diapason of secret tones. Then is the power of Truth demonstrated,—made manifest in the destruction of error."

When viewed from a merely physical standpoint, stillness may perchance be regarded as static, vague, or expressionless, but when considered in the light of spiritual understanding, as revealed in Christian Science, it will be discovered that the exact opposite is the fact. There is nothing in divine stillness that denotes passivity, inaction, or stagnation; rather does it indicate ceaseless, teeming action and power, the constant, silent self-assertion of infinite Mind, divine Being.

Further substantiating the fact that the quality of stillness is indicative of divine power and strength are Mrs. Eddy's words in her book "Retrospection and Introspection" (pp. 88, 89), "Mind demonstrates omnipresence and omnipotence, but Mind revolves on a spiritual axis, and its power is displayed and its presence felt in eternal stillness and immovable Love." It is not surprising that in her description of the intrepid Leader of the Christian Science movement Julia Michael Johnston says in her book "Mary Baker Eddy, Her Mission and Triumph" (p. 155), "There was an inner stillness about her which embraced her industry, a freshness which mellowed the touch of years, a drinking in of immortal essence which silenced the flesh."
