A GOOD EXAMPLE

From the December 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Is one searching for the perfect example that will be a guiding light to him in his everyday experience and in his human relationships? The immediate answer to this searching is given in the revelation of Christian Science, which not only accepts Christ Jesus as the greatest of all examples, but also clearly explains how we may consistently follow his example of deep love for God and man and compassionate awareness of humanity's needs. His humility is traceable in his unselfed nature; he sought no glory of his own, thought not of world prestige or power, but was primarily about his Father's business, the healing and redemption of mankind. Through his full recognition of man's sonship with God he proved that love is universal and triumphs over hate.

No one more clearly understood the full meaning of Christ Jesus' example and followed it more closely than did Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Her lifework stands crystal-clear in its fullness and completeness, proving that during the years she labored to give to the world her priceless discovery, Christian Science, her consciousness was always illumined with the presence of the Christ. Like our Master, she too encountered bitter opposition, the world's hatred of Truth; but she never faltered, and through her steadfast trust in God and with the Christ-example always before her she met and conquered every element of evil. Today the world is abundantly blessed by her great gift.

In one of her letters to The Mother Church Mrs. Eddy with characteristic humility refers to the present acceptance of Christian Science thus (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 136): "At this period my demonstration of Christian Science cannot be fully understood, theoretically; therefore it is best explained by its fruits, and by the life of our Lord as depicted in the chapter Atonement and Eucharist, in 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.'" How often students of Christian Science turn to this chapter in Science and Health in their desire to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus' life and to approach in some measure the Christly example which he expressed in his healing work!
