The Bible, the Christian's chart of life, points to the great spiritual fact that God is Mind. For example, in the book of Daniel we read (2:20,21), "Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:...he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding." Since there is but one God, and He is Mind, there can be and is but one real Mind. This one, being God, is infinite. Being infinite, it is sufficient for everyone. Did not the Master imply that God was his only Mind and that this Mind was the sole source of his healing thoughts and acts when he said (John 14:10), "The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works"?
Brain and nerve are not Mind, but only a material illusion of mind. Therefore brain and nerve can never be the source of real thoughts, or the residence, instrumentality, or channel, even temporarily, of Mind, God. "Does brain think, and do nerves feel, and is there intelligence in matter?" asks Mary Baker Eddy on page 478 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." With conviction based on the spiritual import of both the Old and the New Testament she begins her answer with a resounding, "No, not if God is true and mortal man a liar." Continuing, she adds: "How can intelligence dwell in matter when matter is non-intelligent and brain-lobes cannot think? Matter cannot perform the functions of Mind." Elsewhere she states (ibid., p. 488), "Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension."
God, Spirit—not matter, brain, or nerve —is the only Mind, hence the only real consciousness, the only real intelligence. Therefore God, Spirit—not matter—alone sees, hears, knows, acts. The faculties of seeing, hearing, knowing, acting, belong exclusively to Spirit, God. They cannot originate in matter or be expressed through it or by it. They are originated by God and together with His qualities are unfolded and individualized by Him to form His compound idea or reflection, individual spiritual man —your true spiritual selfhood and mine. God sees, and spiritual man is the expression of God's seeing. Likewise only Mind hears, and Mind's idea, spiritual man, is the expression of Mind's hearing. Mind knows, and man is.
