OBEYING SPIRITUAL INTUITIONS

From the December 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Spiritual intuitions are the gracious means whereby divine Love reaches the human consciousness and influences it for good. They always bless and never harm the recipient. As "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy states on page 85, "Such intuitions reveal whatever constitutes and perpetuates harmony, enabling one to do good, but not evil." These gentle, irresistible messengers, or angels, from God thus perform a treble duty in the interest of humanity. They are permanent witnesses to the infinite wisdom and unchanging love of God. They constantly bless the responsive individual, empowering him to do good without hindrance or restriction. They forestall and nullify the operation in his experience of either intentional or unintentional evil, thus acting as complete guardians and guides, opening a pathway of freedom, inspiration, security, and dominion where to the unresponsive human consciousness monotony, danger, and frustration seem present.

On the other hand, material suggestions claim to have a place and an influence in the affairs of humanity. The suggestive process is intentionally used by some who mistakenly believe in its evil power. Christian Science uncovers evil suggestion, showing it for what it is—a tool of mortal mind, unreal because not of God's creating. Aggressive evil suggestion cannot impose itself on the spiritually protected thought, but only on the unguarded, vacillating state of mind, which it would incite to emotionalism or tempt with doubt, fear, depression, ingratitude, and other unhealthy phases of mortal belief. Bunyan, in his book "Pilgrim's Progress," describes how at one stage of Christian's symbolic experiences "one of the wicked ones got behinde him,... and whisperingly suggested many grievous blasphemies to him, which he verily thought had proceeded from his own mind.... But he had not the discretion neither to stop his ears, nor to know from whence those blasphemies came." Since the writing of that book, however, Christian Science has been revealed and bequeathed to humanity for all time through the selfless lifework of our Leader.

On page 406 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "Sin will submit to Christian Science when, in place of modes and forms, the power of God is understood and demonstrated in the healing of mortals, both mind and body." She continues: "The Science of being unveils the errors of sense, and spiritual perception, aided by Science, reaches Truth. Then error disappears."
