My first contact with Christian Science was an invitation to accompany a neighboring family to a nearby town and visit the Christian Science Sunday School there. This led to my regular attendance at the Sunday School, which in turn led to membership in a branch church when my family moved to a larger city.
The growth Spiritward which came with continued study in the Sunday School and with church membership was a great help when I was serving in the Army during World War II. Whenever problems of any nature arose the solution would be found in a calm study of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. Much gratitude is due the Wartime Workers at each camp, who were always ready to help when called upon. It was at the suggestion of one of them who was helping me at a time when I was hospitalized that I joined The Mother Church. This step brought many blessings into my experience.
Soon after studying what Mrs. Eddy has to say about place, and activity I was offered the opportunity to work as an assistant to a Christian Science chaplain who was transferred into our unit. We were together for about a year and a half, during which time we saw many wonderful proofs of God's love and protection in the midst of adverse circumstances.
