After his resurrection Jesus met two of his grieving disciples on the road to Emmaus, but they failed to recognize him. Yet here was the selfsame Master walking and talking with them just as before the crucifixion. As they journeyed on, Jesus unfolded to them the Scriptures concerning his ministry, but it was not until the evening meal, when he broke bread and gave it to them, that their thought was awakened to recognize him.
All grief and mourning had vanished from their consciousness even before the Master became known to them, for they said (Luke 24:32), "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" In uplifted consciousness grief has no abiding place.
Christian Science has been talking to mankind and opening the Scriptures to them for more than seventy-five years. It has been revealing to men the promised Comforter and man's eternal, perfect, spiritual nature, which frees men from all human ills. In the words of Isaiah (61:3), this Comforter is ever available "to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."
