THE TRIUMPHANT CHRIST

From the April 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science brings to humanity the joyous message that all may here and now so understand and demonstrate divine power as to triumph over the forces of evil. Did not the Psalmist exhort us (Ps. 47:1), "O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph"? In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 139), "From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter." Having discerned the fact constantly reiterated in the Bible, but almost universally ignored, that Spirit, Mind, is the only real power, Mrs. Eddy has so clearly elucidated this truth that a vast host now bears witness to the power of Christ to triumph over sin, disease, poverty, and the fear of death. Students of Christian Science learn that Christ is the true idea of God. They learn, too, that they can comprehend this triumphant Christ, which enabled their Master to perform his marvelous works of healing in Galilee, and even emulate his example as he commanded his followers to do.

What was it that Jesus knew which enabled him to walk on the water, still the storm, heal the sick and sinning, and raise the dead? The answer to this question is of supreme importance to every individual. In seeking the answer one will be greatly assisted by turning to the Bible, where he will find the injunction to have the Mind which was in Christ Jesus, and where he will also find a warning against the carnal mind as being enmity against God. That which gave Jesus his power over evil was his Christly knowledge of God as the only real Mind or creator, and of creation as the manifestation of divine Mind. The first chapter of Genesis is very emphatic on this point, declaring (1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Because of his pure consciousness of the allness of God, Jesus recognized every manifestation of evil, either in the form of sin, disease, storm, lack, or any other phase, as an instance of the carnal or mortal mind, which could and should be corrected because it is enmity against God.

It was clear to Jesus that belief in the reality of evil makes it impossible to realize the infinite goodness, power, and presence of God. It was his constant and consistent adherence to the spiritual fact of a perfect creator, divine Principle, and a perfect creation of spiritual ideas, that enabled him to triumph over the malicious purposes of the carnal or material senses to destroy the Christ, Truth, he taught and demonstrated. Today it is possible for each one to attain this triumphant Christ-consciousness, since it evidences his true spiritual individuality. The only requirements are a desire to know God aright and sufficient humility to study and practice the truth as revealed in the textbooks of Christian Science, the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings.
