PRACTICAL TRUST IN GOD

From the April 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Bible we read (Hebr. 11:6), "He that cometh to God must believe that he is." This is a natural and intelligent conclusion. One could not approach God in thought without believing that He is; but to understand what God is, where He is, and who He is, so that one may wholeheartedly approach Him and trust Him, demands consecrated study of the sacred Scriptures, with the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

Following her own remarkable healing through prayer, Mrs. Eddy sought the Science underlying this healing so that she might practically present it to the world. The result was the textbook. In this book she reveals God so completely, so clearly, and so convincingly that mortals are able to find the answer to those questions of what God is, who He is, and where He is. In this book she gives seven synonyms for God, the six familiar ones from the Bible— Life, Truth, Love, Spirit, Soul, Mind—and also Principle. Defining God as Principle has brought Him very near, for He can now be known as origin and source, as well as power and presence. Christian Science reveals God not only as Father-Mother, ever-present Mind, but as the Mind of man, and man as the true reflection of this Principle, Mind. Since man is image and likeness, as the Bible declares, the only reasonable deduction is that he is entirely well, harmonious, free, prosperous, the expression of the "altogether lovely." To demonstrate this requires trust, and this trust is enlarged as understanding increases.

One of the standard dictionaries defines "trust" as "assured reliance on another's integrity, veracity, justice, etc., confidence. Assured anticipation." To trust, then, there must be assured reliance and clear understanding, based on intelligent reasoning. This can be possible only if one has found a convincing proof in his own heart of what God is, for one cannot trust ignorantly. The proof must be conclusive.
