CHRIST THE RESTORER

From the April 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus once said of himself (Luke 19:10), "The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." His mission was therefore one of restoration. What did he come to restore? Was it merely to heal blindness, to restore a maniac to his right mind, or to regenerate a sinner who had lost her character? These works were symbols of the spiritual restoration he came to give to a world lost in the maze of materialism. In the spiritual realm of existence there is no loss. In the kingdom of heaven there is no element of disintegration or destruction; everything therein is complete, perfect, and permanent, held together in indissoluble union by the laws of God. When man is seen to exist in this kingdom of God and nowhere else, the whole gamut of loss will disappear into oblivion.

The Master spoke of himself as restoring all things, but he did not refer to his human personality as the restorer. He said (John 14:10), "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." It was his understanding of God and His Christ that made the healing works possible. The same rule applies today in the Science which has come to restore the Christ to this age and heal all manner of sin, sorrow, and suffering.

The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is a book of revelation because it unfolds the Christ to us and restores its lost element of healing. There have been many healings of all manner of sin and disease by a perusal of this book. It is obvious that a mere reading of a book could not produce these results. What then is it that does the healing work? It is the Christ, or Truth. Because Science and Health fully reveals the Christ, it must inevitably heal.
