When Christian Science was presented to me over twenty years ago, I did not at first want to read the Christian Science Sentinel that was given me because of adverse criticism I had accepted as being true. However, because I was ill with the hives and because I wanted to please the one who had offered me the Sentinel, I decided to read it, thinking that I would not have to believe it. I read the first article and applied its statements to myself. In less than an hour I was free from pain and all other evidence of the hives. With a feeling of great exaltation I read and devoured the entire contents of the Sentinel. I could scarcely wait to find out more about this new religion and about its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy.
Many demonstrations of healing followed, and my husband and I put our five children in the Sunday School. Through the work of a practitioner our seventeen-year-old daughter was healed of typhoid fever overnight, although she had previously had medical treatment for four weeks.
During World War II our oldest son was on a naval vessel in the Pacific Ocean shortly before it was sunk by enemy aircraft. He was ordered to go to the engine room, and while he was there it caught fire, cutting off his way out. One of his friends came to his rescue and chopped a way of escape for him. They both went on deck of the sinking ship, and my son said, "We can know that God is with us." Then they jumped overboard. The enemy planes were strafing survivors, and there was oil on the water, but they swam two miles in a shark-infested area. Then they were picked up and taken to a hospital. On being found unharmed they were returned to duty.
