INCENTIVE TO THE ACTION OF NATIONS

From the June 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"To coincide with God's government is the proper incentive to the action of all nations." This statement, which was made by Mary Baker Eddy near the beginning of the Spanish-American War, sets a perpetual standard for international action. It is recorded on page 278 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany." Whether such an incentive is recognized by all governments at this period or not, it is emerging as an inevitable basis for international action—inevitable because God, divine Mind, is resistlessly asserting His presence and control of all thought.

God's government by law—a universal fact which Christian Science reveals—is appearing in the midst of evil threats and confusion much as the sun's light shines through a murky fog. Divine Mind is arresting selfish motives and lawless actions. Truth is appearing, and hope is abroad. Christ Jesus' rule, "As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise" (Luke 6:31), is searching the conscience of mankind, causing men to note national moves and to question them when they do not coincide with God's just government. Enlightened humanity has reached a place where it is becoming better understood that no progress can be made in international economy if the Golden Rule is neglected. God's strict demand for obedience to the law of good is being recognized.

The Master's rule coincides fully with God's government, for God is Love, and Love's control of its universe is just and good. This divine order cannot be forever obscured. The coming of Christian Science, coincident with the spiritual advancement of the race, is one more proof that Truth—like the dawn—is irrepressible. Love's rays sweep the universe, bringing the illumination of unselfed love where selfish aims have often cast shadows in times past.
