One afternoon I was reading a Christian Science periodical when I heard a noise. My small son, then three years of age, had fallen down a steep, narrow stairway to the floor below while on his tricycle. When I reached the top of the stairs, he was lying quite still. The article I had been reading had very forcibly brought out the fact that man is inseparable from God, his ever-present, ever-loving Father-Mother. This thought was uppermost in my mind, and I felt no fear. I called out, and there was an immediate response.
I carried the child upstairs and laid him on his bed. His body was racked with sobs, but I said to him, "God is here." Then I got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner by long-distance telephone. The child fell asleep immediately, but his sobbing did not stop. Twice he woke up. Once he said, "Mummy, my head." The next time he said, "Mummy, my mouth." Each time I said, "God is here." I continued silently thanking God that because I knew He was there, evil certainly was not. When my little boy opened his eyes about an hour later, it was apparent that he was completely recovered. He simply bounced to a standing position in his usual joyous manner, and as he did so the sobs ceased. When I gave him his bath that evening there was not even a bruise to remind us of the experience. So complete was the healing that he never even referred to the incident.
One Wednesday evening some years ago I was walking with friends to their home. It was customary for me to spend the night there after attending the Wednesday testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist. Just before arriving at my friends' house, I suddenly decided to go home instead. At six o'clock the next morning I wakened my mother, for I was sure there was something wrong in the kitchen. As I had been subject to nightmares, my mother thought I had just been dreaming, but she arose and opened the back door, which opened onto a circular staircase. This was entirely in flames. We notified the other tenants in that wing of the building, and everyone got outside just in time. We all felt that we had been protected by God, as no one in that part of the building usually arose so early in the morning. I have never been troubled with nightmares since that time.
