"The light of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light" (Matt. 6:22). This statement was the basis for a beautiful healing which came to me about seven years ago. For a period of four years it had been necessary for me to wear glasses while reading or doing other work requiring close and intense use of the eyes.
While riding by bus to and from my business office I read from either the Journal or the Christian Science Sentinel. On one particular day my attention was attracted to the above quotation from Matthew, and I began to ponder it. It came to me clearly that man's vision is spiritual, as Mrs. Eddy points out in her definition of eyes in the Glossary of Science and Health (p. 586). Therefore, how could I see the light of Truth through the lens of mortal mind? The still small voice of divine guidance said, "Take off your glasses; you don't need them any longer." I obeyed, and to this day I have not worn them again.
A testing time came, however, a few days after the healing took place. During one whole day at my office I had to work on statistical reports with very fine print. The argument was strong to put the glasses on, but I realized that healing in Christian Science is permanent and cannot be reversed or annulled. That silenced all temptation of mortal mind to go back to the glasses.
