While I was a student at college, I learned the value of daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. During a Christmas vacation I was tobogganing with friends, and we hit an obstacle which caused a bad spill.
I felt a sharp pain in my leg, but immediately a Bible passage from a recent lesson came to my thought (Hebr. 4:12), "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." While my friends were taking me to my home, I mentally and prayerfully repeated this verse over and over.
The pain stopped by the time I reached home, but since I was unable to use the leg without difficulty, a Christian Science practitioner was called and was asked to give absent treatment. The following day, because of fear expressed by my father, who is not a Scientist, I had an X ray. The physician stated that the leg had been broken, but that it had been set far better than he could have done it. This proved that the Word of God had indeed been a powerful remedy. A cast was put on the leg for protection. I traveled alone back to college on the train and suffered no discomfort on the trip of about nine hundred miles, even while changing stations in a large city. Because of the nature of the break, the doctor said that the cast should remain for six to eight weeks. However, I removed the cast myself in about three weeks and went to a dance, free from all difficulty.
