Testimonies of Healing

From the April 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?" (Ps. 106:2). We cannot show forth all of God's praise, but it is a joy to tell some of what we know of God's goodness.

My approach to Christian Science was not for physical healing but to gain an understanding of God and of the purpose of life. Nothing I had been taught and nothing I had learned through experience answered the questions which kept recurring to my thought. Finally I went to live in a home where the wife was a Christian Scientist, though I was not aware of that until later. This woman's gentle and consistent life of love convinced me that her religion would be worth investigating, and I asked to accompany her to a lecture which was being given by her branch church. I do not now recall the lecturer's name or the specific things he said, but that same week I purchased the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. With these I began the regular study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. These lessons answered all my questions, and I have scarcely missed a day of study since that time. During the years false traits of character, such as stubbornness, apathy, criticism, and lack of appreciation have been overcome through a better understanding of God and of my true relationship to Him and to my brother man.

One evening as I returned from a walk on the ocean beach, dusk began to gather; and while I was crossing a particularly isolated stretch, I was suddenly grabbed from behind and swung around to confront a distorted face. Intense fear gripped me for an instant before the words, "God created man in his own image," came into my thought, bringing the calming assurance that God was right there.
