Mary Baker Eddy appreciated the beauties and glories of the material world for what they implied and for the lessons they taught. She tells us that our concept of the material world must be spiritualized, and she says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 87), "In our immature sense of spiritual things, let us say of the beauties of the sensuous universe: 'I love your promise; and shall know, some time, the spiritual reality and substance of form, light, and color, of what I now through you discern dimly; and knowing this, I shall be satisfied.'"
For many individuals and families, summer is the vacation season when they leave their homes to enjoy days of travel and recreation and enlarge their horizons. These periods usually bring them close to the phenomena of the outdoors and offer glorious opportunities to lift thought from the contemplation of the beauties and pleasures of the material world to the lessons which Christian Science teaches of the spiritual realities of nature and the universe.
As the Christian Scientist goes forth on a vacation in the spirit of anticipating new scenes and interesting adventures, he should also look for increasing spiritual unfoldment and adventure in the lessons which they will teach concerning the things of Spirit, God.
