Pilate, the Roman governor before whom Christ Jesus was tried, presented the people with a choice. He would set free either Barabbas, a notorious robber and murderer, or Christ Jesus. Which would they have him release? Incited by the chief priests and elders, they chose to have Barabbas released.
Pilate said (Matt. 27:22), "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" And we read, "They all say unto him, Let him be crucified."
The profound human drama of this scene was not greater than the present implication it has for every one of us. Whether we realize it or not, we are daily confronted with the question, What shall we do with the Christ? That is, What shall be our response to the Christ, Truth, which Jesus demonstrated and which is forever knocking at the door of human consciousness? Shall we deny it admission, or shall we welcome it into our lives and, like our Master, demonstrate it in good works?
