OUR DUTY TO OUR LEADER

From the July 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The question, What is our duty to our Leader? demands the earnest, prayerful attention of every Christian Scientist. Through alertness and devotion we must constantly be gaining a broader, clearer understanding of our obligation to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. As our duty to this inspired woman is lovingly fulfilled, we shall promote the progress of Christian Science and the spiritual betterment of all mankind.

Simply stated, our duty to our Leader is to follow her inspired guidance. In order to do this, we must first gain a correct estimate of her. Obedience to our Leader becomes natural when we have learned to love her. Our loyalty is without reservation when we realize that her mission was based on divine authority. Such obedience is intelligent awareness of her far-seeing wisdom. Mrs. Eddy did not ask for thoughtless submission. She told her students in her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 (p. 4), "I again repeat, Follow your Leader, only so far as she follows Christ."

Many people have acknowledged that Mrs. Eddy was a woman of intelligence and refinement, an able executive and a gifted writer. Christian Scientists know that she was all this, but far more. Their Leader was a spiritual genius, who through divine anointing brought to mankind the Comforter, the final revelation of Christ, Truth.
