My introduction to Christian Science came when I witnessed my wife's healing of a malignant condition. I still thought, however, that the doctors might have made a mistake and that there had been nothing wrong in the first place. For two years after that, my wife studied the textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and regularly attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist; but I would have nothing to do with the religion.
Not wishing to antagonize me, my wife did not discuss this Science with me. However, one evening she handed me a book and asked me to read a short paragraph, telling me that it would give me some idea of what Christian Science is. After reading it, I asked her where she had gotten the book, and she told me that it was the Christian Science textbook and that it had been in the house for two years. I told her that I would read the book through, and then I would have an argument for her and for Mrs. Eddy.
After reading the book through once, I found myself healed of constipation of long standing. I said that I did not understand it and would read it again and then be ready for an argument. But instead, during the second reading of Science and Health I was healed of habitual drinking. I realized that the liquor habit is not in harmony with Christian Science, that a false habit is not of God's creating, and that man, as an idea of God, is always satisfied. The healings of constipation and the liquor habit have remained permanent.
