Christ Jesus' statements in his Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 6:24), "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon," are as vital and pertinent today as when they were first spoken to his immediate followers. Here and now each one is faced with the decision of adhering to Spirit or matter, of looking to God as the source of all healing and regenerative power or else of turning to worldly methods and medical means. One cannot go two ways at once, nor can he safely sit on the fence.
It is in our clear and steadfast fidelity to Truth, God, that we find strength and healing in our time of need. Jesus used no material means in his healing ministry, and yet he healed all manner of disease and indicated to his followers that they should adhere to his precepts and follow his example. God, Spirit, is the only source of healing; any other dependence is a deception and will eventually betray our trust. The same healing Principle, divine Love, is as present today as it was in the early Christian days, and Christian Science has come to reinstate this Christly method of meeting the needs of mankind.
It is obvious that in this Science we do not take drugs, that is, we do not practice medicine or use material remedies. But is it as obvious that we do not adhere to the theories of materia medica and the theories of disease? To give up the material remedies is only one step toward the goal of freedom from matter and material processes, but to purge our consciousness of the material thinking about disease and of the theories of disease is an even more important step in coming into harmony with the divine Mind, God.
