"NONE GOOD BUT ONE"

From the March 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ONE of the traits of mortal mind is pride in its own ability to do good, to think righteous thoughts, to exercise wisdom and intelligence, and to know what is right and what is wrong.

Denying the possibility that good originates in person, Christ Jesus rebuked an inquirer who addressed him as "good Master" with the words (Matt. 19:17), "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God." Jesus knew that God, the divine Principle of all being, is good and is the only source of good. His reply shows that there has to be a giving up of any belief in personal goodness or ability before mankind can know and demonstrate the infinite ability and goodness which are God's qualities.

Christian Science, which was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy and which confirms the teachings of the Bible, reaffirms that man is made in the image and likeness of God and makes it clear that all good manifested by man is the reflection of God, the cause and originator of good. The false belief that one can be good or clever by his own volition does not glorify God but dims the consciousness of true ability, health, and harmony.
