Christian Science can overcome mental abnormality with the law of divine Love. Mental rehabilitation is effected by establishing in consciousness the allness of God, divine Mind, and man's oneness with Him as His image and likeness. This healing process, as in the case of all discord, destroys belief in the power and reality of matter. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (pp. 205, 206), "When we fully understand our relation to the Divine, we can have no other Mind but His,—no other Love, wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no consciousness of the existence of matter or error."
Our Leader demonstrated mental health as a spiritual fact in a practical way even before she made her scientific healing discovery available to humanity. As a schoolgirl, she subdued an escaped lunatic who invaded the schoolyard, brandishing a club and terrifying the children. This incident is related on pages 33 and 34 of Sibyl Wilbur's book, "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy."
Many years later our Leader wrote in Science and Health (p. 414): "The treatment of insanity is especially interesting. However obstinate the case, it yields more readily than do most diseases to the salutary action of truth, which counteracts error."
