GOVERNMENT BY DIVINE PRINCIPLE

From the January 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When we look up to the stars, do we not always see them in their expected places? What holds them there? What maintains the orderliness of the universe? It is government. The steadfastness of the stars illustrates the invariability of God, divine Principle, governing His spiritual universe. Government, divine law, underlies God's entire creation. Principle is the source of all true government, of changeless harmony, permanent good, and irrevocable law.

To be truly supreme, government must express authority and infallible control. It can have no competitor or opposite. We find supremacy and infallibility only in God, divine Mind. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 379), "The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind."

While Mrs. Eddy stated the truth of jurisdiction in terms of Christian Science, the understanding of God as the Supreme Ruler goes back to Bible times. In picturesque language the Psalmist declared (Ps. 66:7): "He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations," and (Ps. 67: 4), "O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth."
