Since the time of Christ Jesus' ministry, true Christians have had a keen desire for and an earnest expectation of the coming of the Comforter. Only the misconception of what it is and of how it is to appear has kept the Comforter from entering every individual consciousness with healing and regenerating power. What is not generally understood is this: that whenever we turn yearningly to God as the Giver of all good, the Comforter, God's great gift, is at hand to console, guide, and guard.
This most precious gift has come from God in fulfillment of the prophecy of Christ Jesus and in conformity with God's plan for universal salvation. During the period in which the Master lived and worked, the world was not ready for a full understanding of Christ, Truth, which he demonstrated in his daily living. Therefore the masses did not accept his message, although individually many were made happier, healthier, and more independent of matter in one form or another because of his pure concept of the Christ.
Most people of his time resisted the truth which he preached and practiced, but he promised that his teachings would be brought to remembrance through the Comforter. Evidently, human thought had to be prepared to receive God's gift. Jesus said (John 14: 16), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
