Those who have experienced the blessings which flow from the study and practice of Christian Science oftentimes speak of their gratitude and love for its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. It was Mrs. Eddy's purity of thought and selfless devotion which enabled her to supply the key to health and happiness for them. Naturally, those who are grateful for the benefits received look beyond them to thank not only God, the Giver of all good, but His messenger, who opened their eyes to behold His gifts.
Acknowledgment of Mrs. Eddy's great work is not only natural; it is also essential to the full enjoyment of the blessing which it brings to the individual. Christian Science is the revelation of God's omnipotent and omnipresent goodness and gives to mankind a demonstrable statement of the unchanging, divine laws with which He governs the universe, including man. The revelation is inseparable from the revelator, and gratitude for the understanding of spiritual reality necessarily includes a recognition of the mission of the messenger and a just acknowledgment of her unique place in the divine plan for the enlightenment and salvation of the world.
During the first years following the discovery of Christian Science, persecution and frustration attended Mrs. Eddy's efforts to publish the good news to all mankind. Later, when the ranks of those who had been healed through its teachings were swelling to larger proportions, a second danger beset the progress of her newly founded Church.
